I'm showing my Wasteland images at Daydream Republic tonight. I always enjoy showing there, as the space is large and well lit.

Unfortunately, I won't be in attendance, but you should still go and check out my work as well as the other artists that are showing. This show will hang for 1 month.

Testing some stuff out

Trying to make my blog a bit more social and trying to get more people to follow me here. Not that I post all that many blogs...

So I'm trying to get my Tumblr account to feed into this blog. I am a bit confused and this may take reaching out to a few friends and seeing if they can assist me with my goals here.

I was debating on setting my Tumblr as my main blog and forgoing this one, as Tumblr is MUCH easier to update via my iPhone than Blogger is. But My site won't recognize Tumblr as an external link source.

So now I'm trying out Feedburner to see if that will work.

More to come as I figure stuff out.

Showing a number of pieces from previous shows as well as some brand new images freshly shot yesterday... nothing like leaving it for the last minute.

Here is the release info:

Fleeting Projects for March 28th is very excited to present a group show of photography. Titled "Wasteland" these three photographers each explore a different path into fractured, deceptively empty and occasionally forbidding realms. Saryn's haunting images of groups of eclectically clad youthful figures at play in the middle of nowhere evokes echos of fashion photography as might be carried out after a particularly apocalyptic turn of events in the Phillip K. Dick novel. Greg's stoic imagery looks at the various sites around us as surrogate places, vacant sets perhaps, at once latent with the desires and fantasies, but also as coldly inanimate. Eron's characteristically heterogeneous installation exploits humor, glitches, and broad knowledge of photographic history to interrogate our ambivalent relationship to virtual landscapes and cutting edge entertainment.

From the artists:

Saryn's images are particularly inspired by the idea of a fashionable apocalypse. Each image has a feeling of being alone in the world, and a timeless quality. Her fascination stems from the quality and details you see in vintage inspired wardrobe, and the idea that even after the world we know ends, there will still be a place for fashion.

Greg De Stefano will be showing two projects of desolation and future wastelands. Kuugeki is a series of panorama creations in the "What If" of an empty Japan devoid of people, and the second is a documentation homage to the lost souls and pursuit machines of the Road Warrior Event.

In Eron's sprawling installation "A Land to Die In" panoramas of corpses, gnarled trees, aged cyanotyopes, flickering lanterns, as well documentary images of fans from BlizzCon twine together to delve into the virtual landscapes of Massive Multiplay Online Role-Playing Games such as "World of Warcraft." By standing in the middle of the maelstrom via his gnomish warlock Guydebord his work looks at the way that these cutting edge technologies are entwined with a history of photography from the 1800's wilderness and how the swagger of adventure, both in geographical and technological terms, affects our relationship to art, imagination and society.

Fleeting Projects is an ultra-temporary experiment in presenting art hosted monthly by Renee's Courtyard Cafe. Artists has twelve hours to arrive, display, and remove the work from the space. Renee's Courtyard Cafe is one of the oldest buildings in Santa Monica, and a former home that has been converted for different uses over nearly 100 years. Fleeting Projects attempts to push at the assumptions and boundaries to traditional art display and focuses on installation, intervention, performance, video and site-specific projects.

Website updates!!

So I've been concentrating on my website for the last two days. I went through all of my work for the last year or so and chose out my favorite images. Some were already on my website, but many were not. I then uploaded them to the site and changed some of the general aesthetics for my site around.

I removed some images from my Series sets and added some other images. I revamped my galleries and removed the product gallery, as I don't feel it showcases my best work.

I changed my homepage slideshow images and updated my splash page. I also added an about me page, with more text pages to come. I'm still working on writing up my business and marketing plans.

THAT is a difficult task, as I'm not really good at selling myself. I fall into the "My work should speak for itself" category. Even if I know for a fact that that isn't true.

I've also been working on setting up a few new shoots. I have finally moved on making the final decisions on a shoot I've had in mind for a few months. I've contacted the appropriate people, and put a date on it. Hopefully, the appropriate people will all be available and willing! hah!!

That series will be incorporated in my Wasteland show on March 28th. I'll post the information for that on my next blog post. ;)

Looking for work.

I'm sitting outside in the cold at Starbucks browsing the net right now. I find that I am more likely to get stuff done if I leave my area of comfort and where there are soooo many distractions to be found!

I've been spending a lot of time haunting craigslist, emailing potential clients, contacting people I've worked with in the past and reading lots and lots of blogs!

The last month was a tight one for me. I didn't work all that much, and part of that was due to my lack of networking and pushing myself to find other work.

This has brought to my attention just how important it is not to rest on your laurels. I am confident that I will be able to make things work, but whew! It's been difficult.

I read a lot of blogs hosted by other photographers and people who are passionate about creativity. Some of these I found through searching different blog sites for photography related information, through twitter.com There are so many brilliant posts to twitter that if I didn't limit my time reading blogs, I'd be doing it all day long!

I'm currently working on my business marketing plan. I've been at a loss as to how to go about it, but a blog by http://rising.blackstar.com/ has been posting extremely informative blogs on how to go about it with terrific examples.

Another brilliant blog I've been following both on twitter and through my RSS is http://www.petapixel.com/

I'll post more on my information sources soon, as well as what else I'm up to, and how my marketing plan is coming along.

24 hour Cancer Dance-A-Thon

This March, I will be swing dancing for 24 hours straight at a charity event called the 24 Hour Cancer Dance-a-thon. It’s a 24 hour swing dance that takes place on the second weekend of March in Orange County, California. All profits from the event go directly to cancer research and treatment at The City of Hope Hospital. I invite you to participate with me or to make a donation on my behalf to this worthy cause!

New set

I just finished editing my shoot with Sharon TK. I'm thrilled with the images. We started out shooting in Venice at the canals, The cloudy weather was a perfect softbox. We got some fun images, lots of pretty backgrounds and interesting buildings.

From there we decided to go to a rocky beach location to shoot the second look. Off the top of my head I remembered that I used to go hang out at El Matador Beach and it was one of the prettiest beaches in the LA area.

We took the trek 45 minutes up the coast to shoot there. Sharon did her make up in the car (props!) And Alika Schaeffer who was our wonderful hair stylist did her hair on the bluff in the wind. We threw a collar that Lacy Valentine leant to me (made by the fabulous Drew Bird) on Sharon then made our way down the cliffside to the waters edge. It was rather perilous for Sharon as she wasn't expecting to hike and only had her high heels to wear. Alika was the perfect gentleman and held her arm on the way down the cliffs.

The place was crawling with photographers... But we found a spot and got started. It was cloudy and the sun went behind the clouds, not to be seen again. Which was a bit of a bummer, but I still made it work.

We had to dodge the tide and spent a lot of time jumping on rocks and running backwards... Alika dropped Sharon's sweater into the water but was again a perfect gentleman and gave her the jacket off his back - which she tried to stop him, but he insisted!

It was a great shoot and a lot of fun. I look forward to working with Sharon again, perhaps next time I can go visit her area and shoot there!!

WHAT?!? Another Gallery show??

Yes, it's true. I'm showing in another Gallery show. This one is at the Betty on Wednesday Dec. 16 from 8-10/2am. 8-10 is the actual show and then it gets packed and club-like.

I'm really excited to be showing at another lesbian oriented location. And this one is at Fubar down in West Hollywood. It's a one night only event and the photos are a mish mash of beauty and fashion pieces 3 will be approximately 11x14, and the others are my standard 16x20 image size. I'll be showing (recenet) older work as well as some newer pieces I've never shown before.

Linda Vista Hospital

An acquaintance/past co-worker recently contacted me to see if I was interested in going in with her on renting space at the Linda Vista Hospital (Dexter and many other films have been filmed there) Together, we can rent it for 2 hours. It's a huge abandoned hospital in Boyle Heights. So us doing separate shoots while there won't be a problem!

The shoot is tomorrow, the models are some of my favorite girls - Lacy Valentine and Sarah Hilker, and someone I haven't worked with in years, but have been wanting to again, Annisse Damefatel.

My goal is to do a spooky but very fashion shoot. Not sure how that will turn out, as all three girls lean toward the spooky side, as do I, and we all have that goth-girl aesthetic. So, most likely, it's going to be on the goth side - We are styling it ourselves.

I'm UBER-excited about it. I did a walk through at the hospital the other day, am going to try to go back today, but time is tight today.

Figurative Theater

Is an upcoming show that I'm showing in, I had mentioned it before.

I've finally done the shoot for it. And edited the images... all 6 of them. I'll be editing more of the images from the shoot and sharing them on my website, AFTER the showing. Which is November 14th, 2009.

I don't believe I can tell you just how excited I am about this show. I feel like I've met and possibly surpassed the Desolation Holiday images.

This shoot was a collaboration with Wicked Vanity - wardrobe stylist and fab partner out at the Rosebowl Fleamarket every month. She also styled my Desolation Holiday shoot. Make up was by Stephanie Lawrence of Make up Nation, and Jen Morgan. Hair was by my wonderful sister, Jeanna who is the color specialist at Luxe Labs and ArtLab in Santa Monica. She has recently discovered the allure of working with me! It makes me very happy to finally be able to bring our creative sides together and make amazing art together. I'm so proud of everything she has achieved. Ok, enough gushing about my sister.

The models were one of my favorite muses, Lacy Valentine, possibly some new muses, Alexandra Matthews and her beau/partner Yellow Strange, and a new girl I discovered at a Luxe Labs workshop that I photographed, Amy Goldberg. For her first ever fashion shoot, she did amazing! But.... You have to come to the show to see!

I'll be hanging 6 prints, framed in custom frames designed by my dad. I know what he designed, I just can't wait to see it in reality.

These will be one off prints in the custom frames. All will be for sale at the gallery.

What a wild ride

The last month has been chaotic to say the least. I've been shooting like mad (quite happily so!!) Both for myself and for others.

After the Beauty Expo I did a shoot for J's Hair salon which was absolutely amazing. It's always a pleasure to work with the salon and their students. Everyone is so talented and sweet.

We did 4 models (read, looks) All of which were creative and beautiful.

I worked with Sharon Esther and Lacy Valentine on a shoot at LACMA with Lacy in Fierce Couture Latex.

Then I went and shot stills for Robyn Von Swank's music video for the band Rise... Pictures at some point when I'm able to release them. As always, working with Robyn and All Sets was a blast. Unfortunately for me, I was way booked that weekend so couldn't do both days, or spend as much time as I would have wanted to at the set.

The next day I had a shoot with the band PsyLab. 3 kids from all over... Severina X Sol flew in that day from Seattle, Dre lives here and Per C flew in from New York. We had a lot of fun shooting, laughing and them haming it up for me. One of my favorite pictures from that set is:

The following day I had a shoot with French model Scarlet Feverrr. I styled the set and did the hair. The make up was done by MakeUp Nation, Stephanie Lawrence.

Next was the Rosebowl Flea Market, which was the start of the busy season out there. Time for holiday shopping! And time for me to get cracking and add more merchandise to me catalog!! I also made my first ever sale on my etsy store - sarynangel.etsy.com

Then I've done a few other shoots -

Teresa M Nunez - working with a new and fabulous Make up artist - Mieko (who also worked with me the following day on a shoot with Ms. Lacy Valentine) We used wardrobe pulled by Teresa from Garden Party designs. We shot on location in my neighborhood and at Echo Park.

Hair feathers and necklace in first shot are designed by me! (see my etsy store for Jewelry) Hat and choker in the red dress shots are also by me.

Lastly... and now we are pretty much caught up to today.... I did a shoot with Lacy Valentine working with Mieko again, and Kahlil Oliver out of New York who did the hair.

I am so excited about the way things are going for me right now.

Keep November 14th open. There will be a gallery show (opening night is the 14th) and will run for approximately 3 weeks. The show will feature my work (all new concept and shots) custom framed using frames my dad designed for me. My sister is doing the hair... It's a family operation! Actually, aside from my dad and sister, wardrobe will be styled by the fabulous Wicked Vanity, Make up by Stephanie Lawerence, and 4 models... ;) Anything more than that and it'll ruin the surprise!

Long Beach Beauty Expo and other busy-ness.

So last weekend was the Long Beach Beauty Expo.

I have been working with a hair studio/academy for the last 6 or so months doing photoshoots for them - hair shows and portfolio pieces. They did a Hair/fashion show at the Beauty Expo which I photographed. In exchange for the photography, they offered me the use of their booth to sell my photography and my jewelry.

I brought my friend and co-conspirator, Vintage Rags in on it with me. She and I share the booth at the Rose Bowl Flea Market. In truth, if it weren't for her, my life would be much more difficult, and the booth would have been virtually impossible. She held down the fort for me while I was off shooting.

I made a lot of contacts and sold several pieces. It was a great 2 days overall!

Last week I also shot with LA Style, a fashion stylist from Canada - we had 6 girls and shot on location. Photos to come!!!! Patience, my dears.

Coming up - Tomorrow I have the fashion shoot for the hair salon, which I'm very very excited about. It will be huge. As you can see from the hair show above, they are extremely talented and do things that are right up my alley!

I'm working all next week assisting my dear friend, which will make for a great week.

I also spent a day photographing all of my jewelry - Tick Tock Trinkets. I spent a bit of time this evening adding most of the photos to my Etsy store - etsy.sarynangel.com

I did a shoot with Lacy Valentine, one of my all time favorite models to work with. She styled the shoot. Stephanie Lawrence did the Make up (again, another of my favorite people to work with.) We worked with Tabitha Bojalil for hair, who did an amazing job and was super sweet. I'm looking forward to working with her again.

This shoot was something new for our portfolios. Very androgynous and masculine with feminine overtones.

What a month it's been.

Finally a few moments spent updating my online self.

I have been shooting like mad for the last month. From the Desolation Holiday shoot out at the Salton Sea to a bikini shoot featuring the work of my friend Stephanie Lawrence who does an amazing job at artificial tanning. Then getting to work with Anna DeMeo from New York.

I can finally take a breath!

So to start - the Desolation Holiday show was a raging success - You can see pictures from the show Here. Please note, I am not the girl with the long red hair in the first few photos labeled with my name. I have short blond and pink hair, as seen later in the set.

I promised some eye candy a few blogs ago from all the shoots I've been doing lately.

So here ya go.

Plastic Martyr - pretty pretty boy in some beauty shots. The feather neck piece was a gift to me from one of my closest friends, Skarlett. She found the piece at an estate sale and bought it for me. I've used it in the past, but this set really shows it off.

And then we played with his mermaid dress... the color is perfect with his skin tones!

Then there was my scouting shoot at the Salton Sea. We went to both sides of the sea to scout. I can't wait to go back out there and do more shooting and scouting.

Then there was my set with Sarah Hilker wearing Jess Darwins wardrobe.

The corset in this image is Jessica Darwin... I styled the rest pulling from my own wardrobe.

I also photographed a fashion show and my friend SuperKate's bellydance group - Subee Djinn, but am still working on those images... I'll post them soon.

Even more recently was a shoot with Chrystyne from Chicago. I've been talking to her online for something like 6 years... we finally got together and did a fun 80's inspired shoot (on my 86 honda scooter) and some beauty shots. Sooo much fun was had. But that is a post unto itself.

Salton Sea - Desolation Holiday shoot.

...Above picture was taken when I went out scouting the weekend prior to the shoot. The legs are those of my lovely companion and fellow photographer, Stephanie Dana.....

I recently did a HUGE shoot out at the Salton Sea with a wonderful team. I really really couldn't have done it without them. Most especially Ivy - Wicked Vanity. Without her, we would have boiled alive, and some of us might not have made it out there... not to mention that the hair stylist backed out via an email at 1am. Actually, to be fair, she just needed a ride at that point - she officially backed out at 6am (call time WAS 6am), again via email. She did have my phone number. But couldn't call me. If it weren't for Ivy, I'd have been in a tight spot. Ivy ran home (from my place in downtown LA to North Hollywood) to grab her hair kit and saved the day by doing not only wardrobe, but hair too. Ivy also supplied the pop up tent and drove her car. So big thanks goes out to her.

The make up artist was Melinda. She has worked with me on a number of other shoots. Such a doll, and trooper. We all did battle with flies that day - but for her to stay calm and do 3 girls make up when being attacked by flies - many kudos to her.

All the models were A-fing-Mazing. Lacy Valentine, Sarah Hilker and Tracey P. Each has caused me much pain in that I can't decide which photo to use as there were soooo many wonderful shots to choose from. Rest assured - I did manage to narrow it to the 4 for the show... and then 90+ for everyone involved.

eeee. It was so much fun, even with the flies and the heat and the late start.

Now... here is the part where I leave you in anticipation. Because the photos from that shoot will not be released until after the gallery show on the 18th.

This month has been slim pickings as far as work has gone, but at least I have some work.

I've been shooting like mad. (I'll post links and photos later - I'm typing this out on my iPhone!!)

I went out scouting at the Saltin Sea last Saturday. Had a blast, hung out with a new friend. And it felt absolutely comfortable. She was a great companion.

Then Sunday I did a shoot with Plastic Martyr. Who is a very beautiful and androgynous boy. Just the kind I like to work with! He was a sweetheart and absolutely beautiful.

Monday I shot with Sarah Hilker wearing Jessica Darwin wardrobe. 3 looks, each super fabulous and as always, Sarah really brought it. We shot on location in downtown LA. Kudos to everyone for bearing with me as I drove around looking for the perfect place to shoot.

The last few days have been a whirlwind of activity and organization as I've prepped for my big shoot tomorrow. My stomach is all wobbly and I feel on the verge of tears, both from excitement and nerves!!

The shoot is for the gallery show I'm in next month at UltraStar Gallery with Apollo Star and Dan Santoni. More details forthcoming soon. Next week? Dan asked me about credits for the flyer today.

After my shoot I jet off to Phoenix for a relaxing?! Weekend hanging out with my friend Kari and internet friend Joi & her husband to celebrate their marriage. More photo shennanigans will be had - as Joi is also a photographer and we are going to each play models for each other with kari thrown into that mess somewhere!! ;). Let the fun begin.

Ok. I'm off to an evening of assisting with set decoration for a stylist friend! Expect a nice long post that is photo heavy sometime in the next week!!!

Location!

Sunday I had a shoot with a model I've long admired... We had talked a year or so ago about shooting, and just recently she contacted me. We set up a shoot and made it happen. There were a number of issues - I made the mistake of thinking I had arranged for a MUA for the shoot - Until said MUA questioned me about my assumptions! Unfortunately, she couldn't do the shoot... then I asked another MUA, who had to leave at a specific time, placed a casting call, got a response, but never heard back from her after I replied.

I completely dropped the ball on this shoot - forgetting that I had told the model I'd pull wardrobe... I probably shouldn't be admitting this on a public forum! Really, I generally do have it better together than this. I didn't pull the wardrobe as I should have.

I went through my collection of clothing and pulled together one outfit for the shoot, Tracey brought her collection of odds and ends, and her make up kit - luckily she is a MUA on her own, and we were able to pull the shoot out of the trash.

She locked her keys in her trunk as she was about to leave - I was on the verge of calling the shoot. But.... within 15 minutes, she had it all figured out and was on her way.

She arrived at my place and was as adorable as her pictures. We pulled out 2 additional outfits for the shoot - 3 looks. And she did her make up. Then we piled into my car and headed for Malibu. I drove and drove... tried to pull into 2 streets that said Coastal access - BOTH were gated and locked. So we turned around and pulled off to the side of the road where we could see the beach and a few other beach goers.

She changed in the car (all professional here folks) and I grabbed my camera and we walked down to the water.

We looked around and found a likely spot. After shooting this outfit on the rocks, we saw a tunnel and decided to shoot in front of it. Back to the car we went to change outfits.

At this point, I was processing how I wanted to shoot each outfit, and realized... I forgot the one outfit I had pulled together. So all we had were her two outfits. ARGH. I did manage to remember the accessories though - the feather headband in the shot above is part of my accessory designs - Tick Tock Trinkets I also remembered...

GOGGLES! ;) I had just gotten these at the Rosebowl swapmeet a few months before and had been dying to use them.

Just to the right of her was a dead rat. ick. We speculated that the poor thing had gone swimming to its detriment. The water behind her was foul and bubbly. And flowing right into the ocean. So sad.

After we got lots of great shots from that angle, I decided I wanted some of her actually on the beach, so, with a family of 3 watching we traipsed over toward the ocean and played along the edge of the surf for a bit.

There are so many great shots from that shoot... ahhh. I want to share them all here, but... instead, I'll share a link to the rest on my flickr page.

I've rediscovered my passion for Photography with the purchase of my 5DMII.. I've been taking it with me for any opportunities to shoot. Most recently, at the Prop 8 Protest on the Day of Decision.

That time again

Just realized it's been a while since I posted... so here we go!

I've been extremely busy working at Mattel of late. I have done a few personal shoots - one with the lovely Sonia, who is the lady I met at Starbucks (You'll remember from a previous post) The images came out stunning. She is definitely a natural.

Then I did a shoot with TaraRyze out here from Florida for a few weeks. This was more for fun, and had a definite alternative bend to them. The first set is more pin up style, topless with pasties and a girdle and stockings... The second set involved a lovely dress I picked up at a fleamarket a few months ago. I'm very pleased with the results.

I'm keeping busy trying to find more photography work. I'm focusing on my own desires and goals as far as what I want to shoot. I've been making connections, which is always a good thing.

I recently shot a wedding, acting as second shooter. Using my new 5DMII oooh. do I love it. Robyn VonSwank was the primary shooter, and she is all about upgrading from the 5DMI.. hehe. I have to say, I am very pleased with the results and I found the entire experience to be a pleasure. Definitely going to keep weddings (low stress ones!!) as an option! I can't wait to get images back from that, they will be a welcome addition to my portfolio.

Gallery shows - at the moment, there is a possibility for a HUGE show in July - the 11th to be precise. I've been asked to participate, so at this point, I'm shooting for that and looking for models - the theme is Destruction Alley... I'm very excited about it - it's a group show and some very big names have been asked to participate. I'll keep you updated as I find out more!

The New Puppy Gallery show was a success, I had a blast and very much appreciate all who came out to support. The Gallery itself is a wonderful location - we all were fantasizing about living there!!!! New work goes up tomorrow... I may swing by to check it out - It's a Cannibal Flower show, and I will not be showing in it! ;)

Kindness of strangers.

I am currently enjoying a passion Iced Tea at Starbucks courtesy of the lovely lady standing behind me in line.

I held the door for her when we walked in, and got in line. Placed my order, only to discover that I had left my wallet in the car. I told the barista I'd be right back, and she (lovely lady) offered to purchase it for me - I didn't take her up on it, it's LA, who expects kindness from random strangers? I ran to my car, got my wallet and got back in line - she was still ordering, and gestured for me to come up to the front with her. She was serious! I talked to her while she was placing a large order for work and said to put my drink on her tab.

After thanking her, I handed her my business card and told her to call me if she wanted to get any photos done - I'd be happy to work with her, and give her a discount! She was impressed with my card and said she would be in touch.

What a wonderful interaction. I'm happy that she didn't allow me to stand by my typical jaded standards and perhaps I might get some work out of being friendly and talking to people!

Visit to Ren Faire

Sunday I took the opportunity to hang out with my sister and her fiance. I met her at the Renaissance Faire.

After she left, I took time to hang out with some friends out there. I really wish that Faire wasn't the only time I saw some of them. However, when I do see them out there, it is always a blast.

I also got to spend time with one of my closest friends - again, someone I don't get to see anywhere nearly often enough. You'll see photos of her dressed in green nobility!

I spent the day photographing friends and shows.

As always, I'd love to hear feedback. It's a bit different from any of the photos that I normally shoot - But I'm having too much fun with my camera, feeling inspired and enjoying shooting outside of my normal comfort space.

I'm quite happy with the results.

Keep May 9 free - I have a show coming up. This one is a big deal to me - the curator is trying to get photography into more galleries. Some of which he is new to curating. I'm extremely excited to work with him on this. It will be a group show, and I'll be showing alongside a painter that I work with from time to time. Her work is far different from mine - aside from being paintings to my photography - but I am very impressed with it!

The show location and information is TBD - all I know at this time is that it is May 9 and either going to be on the westside - Santa Monica/Venice OR in the Silverlake area.

Recent photo work

I've been busy busy updating my flickr account. I added photos from a recent shoot with Lily Rose Art - Her clothing designs, which is more of catalog work rather than fashion. I'm pretty happy with the results, but am left with a feeling of something being missing. The model was terrific, the designs are fun, if a bit on the casual side. Probably shooting against a blank white wall is the reason for my discontent.

I also retouched a number of the shots from my road trip cross Route 66. It's been a year. Figured it was about time. I'm actually very pleased with them. They are pretty, and bring back a lot of memories. They were all shot using available light, and in color. All of the B&W's were done in post. I miss shooting film and specifically Black and white. My favorite film to use used to be Ilford 3200 - you can't get that kind of b&w in post... well, at least, I haven't been able to!!

I recently purchased a new camera - I'm waiting for it to arrive, this Friday! it was supposed to arrive on Tuesday, but they made a mistake and shipped it ground, rather than 2 Day. Ah well. I'm very very excited to receive it. I feel like I will be able to take the next step in my career with this purchase! So... Here I am very impatiently waiting for Friday. I plan to run around shooting anything and everything as soon as I get it... won't be leaving my hands for a while. I need to get as used to shooting it as I am with the 20D. ;)

Other than that, I've been adding mobile uploads to my facebook page, trying to get in the habit of just taking fun photos while I'm out and about. Most of my work in the last few years has been in studio and very set up. I want to loosen up and expand my work.

Life has been surprisingly busy for the last few weeks.

I finally finished retouching all of the shoots I had backed up. I'm trying to decide which images belong on my site I'm also trying to figure out how to get the funds together to re-build www.SarynAngel.com which at this point, is being forwarded to www.SarynChristina.com Hopefully soon.

Taxes are done. Waiting to get all of them back. Last year was good to me. Now to sock away a portion of it so that I can continue on this path of mine.

I am working the spring season photographing children at schools. It is mind numbing, not creative, but it pays the bills. I am also trying to keep busy with Mattel... However the economy seems to be slowing things down. I have 3 shoots for May for the hair salon that I've been doing some work for! eeeeee! So very excited about that. It far from mind numbing.

I have big plans for this year - I recently had a friend do an Angel reading for me. Think Tarot cards, but this is cards with angels on them that are around you and guiding you. Well... everything points to me being on the right path, and that if I just stick with it, I will be able to make my dream come true. Regardless of whether you believe or not - it's nice to have someone tell me that I'm doing what I should be doing.

I constantly second guess myself and wonder if I'm good enough... I feel like I don't do nearly enough to make my goals and dreams come true. Reality is, I probably will never feel like I'm doing enough. But such is the way when you are a creative freelancer... There are always more things you could be doing!!!

Today I've been updating my Linkedin.com profile and writing recommendations and such. Sending out emails to jobs on craigslist and in general just trying to be more social. I know I tend to let things come to me - I don't make enough effort to reach out to others. A lot of that is just the fact that I'm overwhelmed by all of the wonderful people I have in my life and that I continue to connect with every day. :)

Italian Fashion Magazine?!

Recent news - The hair salon that I shot for a few months ago is so pleased with the imagery, they are submitting it to an Italian Fashion Magazine. Hopefully, the magazine will be pleased as well and publish it!

I've been shooting quite a lot lately. I did a shoot with Sarah Hilker, Make up and Hair by Daven Mayeda. The styling was 1920's, complete with all of her long hair in finger waves!

Then I shot with Lacy Valentine again, Make up by AnnaRose, Hair by Angela Du. Hey Sailor sent us hats, so there were 4 looks around the super cute pill box hats and one mini top hat. Super cute. The last look was inspired by Camille Rose Garcia's art.

Sunday, I worked with Summer 6 and Angela Du (again) using Green Inspired wardrobe designed and styled by Angela.

Unfortunately, I've been madly creating Jewelry this week and haven't been able to do as much retouching as I wanted to do.

My Jewelery is being sold at LuxLabs/ArtLabs in Santa Monica. An upscale Hair salon that sells various art and jewelry pieces on consignment. I'm very excited to work with them.

And finally, I'll be selling Jewelry at the Rosebowl Swapmeet again this Sunday.

We will be fairly easy to find, towards the front and our tent will be very noticeable. I am not sure how... but it is hand crafted by my partners, and should be very fab. We will be the booth doing custom alterations. Which should be advertised on the website, as well as on the flyer!!

Review of the gallery show

Well last night went well from all accounts. There were a good number of people coming in, especially for a winter turnout. Luckily, it didn't rain which encouraged patrons.

They did allow smoking, which I wasn't happy about. But it was kept to a minimum and the front door was open created a fresh breeze concistantly. There was some interest in my work, though, none sold.

I am absolutely horrid about talking to people who are looking at my work. I've been told it's something I need to work on.

So - last night was my chance. I didn't thrive on it, but I did improve. It's a polroject that I need to work on. And I shall!!!

My work will be hanging all month long, so, if you get a chance, stop by and check it out!!

Internet problems.

I am sitting at home typing this out on my iPhone. For some reason, my Internet is down and has been for a couple of days.

I was out of town for an extended weekend, which was also without Internet. I know that it's good to dis-connect from the Internet, but it feels like I am losing touch with the world. I love my iPhone and all of it's wonderful abilities, but there is so much that can't be done with it's limitations!

I'll be taking a trip to starbucks a little later to make use of the Internet there. Free since I'm a registered starbucks card user. Yay!

So, everyone should keep their fingers crossed that the rain stops by Sunday! Once again I am selling jewelry and photography at the Rosebowl swapmeet! Come out and see me!!

Now I am off to run some errands and really get my day started.

Gallery show! Tomorrow!!!

Wow, it sprung up on me.

I have work hanging at the 2nd street Cigar shop and gallery. Tomorrow is the LA artwalk, and the opening reception. It's right next door to the Edison.

Everyone should come by! There are lots of galleries opening their doors and incredible artists sharing their work.

My work is hung in a Cigar Shop so that means, yes, cigar smoke. But! They won't be smoking during the artwalk, so you will be able to view the gallery without the smoke.

I have 6 pieces hanging, all custom framed for sale. There are 3 pieces for $250, those are approximately 20x24 framed.

Then there are 3 pieces that are 16x20, and those are $175.

I'll be at the gallery from around 6pm. There will be wine and snacks. So, come down and meet me and check out the lovely work. I'll probably go down and wander around the artwalk during the day - after UPS arrives with my new lighting equipment!!!!

The opening is from 6-9pm, though, the shop is actually open until 11pm. on Thursdays.

This weeks Photo project

I have been wanting a new profile picture for Myspace, Facebook, Twitter and the like... So this week, I decided that my photo project would be "Self Portrait".

I intend to do at least one non-model related photo shoot and upload a photo from it here every Wednesday. :) Next week will be something from Vegas... :) ooh, Fun!!

In the mean time... I've added the self portrait here. It has a few uses - I got to feel pretty for a few hours - working in the studio, I don't dress up or really do my make up all that much, and I haven't been going out lately.

It also allows all of you to see what I look like. I hear from a lot of sources that people like to know what the person behind the words looks like. Whether you will be modeling for me or not!

And it serves to begin the weekly project!

Weekly update inspiration!

I want to do a weekly photo project here. This would be an ongoing project where every week I'd update it with a new photo on a specific subject matter.

Right now, I use recent photos from my shoots as visual candy.

I'd like your input on what the photo subject should be....
Here are some of my ideas

Self portrait - feeds the ego, and gets people to associate my face with my work... I also get to play dress up and feel pretty.

A photo from wanderings around LA... Every week I'd have to go on an adventure walking around LA. - Griffith park, downtown LA, Santa Monica, the Beach anywhere I can find visual frivolity. (I'd love to have any of you join me on my wanderings... much more fun with friends!!)

A found object. - coffee cup on the street, condom in the gutter, a flower on a branch... Anything inanimate.

This is inspired mainly through some of the other blogs I read - GalaDarling over at iCing does a blog and has weekly events - a carousel of things she has seen/experienced each week that inspire her, as well as a Daily Outfit. She is the most religious of the bloggers that I read with her updates, so she stands out. There are others that do it too.

Anyway... Which of the above is your favorite idea? Which would get you coming back to my blog to read each week, if you knew I'd post a new update on say, every Wednesday?

Excitement abounds!

I've been working quite a bit this week. Not the least of which was the shoot that I had mentioned in my previous post for the hair salon.

I sent a follow up email to the salon thanking them for the opportunity to work with them and letting them know how much I enjoyed it, as well as the work they had done.

The response was that the images I had given them the day of the shoot had been sent to the manager of the salon (who is in Japan right now)and he really liked them. So, when he gets back from Japan he will be in contact with me to discuss upcoming events.

This is the first client I've had that is actually in the direction and the field that I want to be in. I am so excited!!

While at the salon for the shoot, one of the stylists shared a brochure with me for an upcoming hair show. One of the images I had shot for the salon on my first shoot with them was used in the brochure!! Very very exciting news for me. Unfortunately, she only received one copy, so could not give it to me. I'm going to look into getting a copy of it for my book!

This is just a quick post to keep things up to date. I've been working on images all week long - I have recently completed 4 shoots that I am trying to get caught up on. 2 down, and 2 more to go.

I'm working on a set of Jezebelle X. These two shoots were a blast, as both models are people I consider friends and have worked with several times in the past. It had been a while since I had seen either of them. So it was great catching up and getting to shoot with them.

I am also working on the test shoot I did for a hair studio that I'm hoping turns into a regular paying client. Things look good at this point. Time will tell.

So... That is what I'm up to. That and I'm working at Mattel a few days this week. I'm hoping they continue to call me in 2-3 days a week, as that will pay my bills and allow me to continue to pursue my photography full time.

Oh! I almost forgot - The Gallery show at Ruin was a lot of fun, and generated some interest, if the number of fliers that were taken is any indication. Did not sell anything, but it was a good start. Looking forward to the gallery show on the 10th of February - That one is a month long! More info coming on that!

I am working on marketing the gallery show at Ruin (this Friday!!) posting it on all of my social media sites.

I am also working on a special to get some work together. I'm offering a photoshoot for Valentines day, $100.00 for the shoot, 5 retouched digital images or 1 print image. This does not include a make up artist or wardrobe.

Shoot must be booked by February 10.

Then this afternoon I am assisting on a casting call at Mattel.

Overall, it is going to be a very productive day!

Gallery Show in February!

I've done a few shoots recently - not as many as I'd like... but am thrilled with what I have done.

I did a shoot with Lola the Vamp - some of you may recognize her from one of the published images in Mammoth Book of Erotic Women that my work was featured in a few years ago... She came back over from the land down under and graced my studio again. Those pictures will be coming soon.. Still working on them.

Then I did a shoot with Precious Little... Beauty and Fashion...

I am horrible at blogging.

I used to blog a lot. I'm not sure what changed.

Well, here is an update for all of you who might be curious!

The last few months have been an exciting time for me. I've been shooting off and on - more off than I'd like, however, I am thrilled with the work I have been doing. I do miss the creativity of the dark alternative world... but am working on incorporating my own creativity into the fashion and beauty world that I want to be a part of.

I've worked on a couple of video sets produced by the incredible Robyn Von Swank and AllSets. One was for the band Mortis - the video looks FANTASTIC. The second was for CombiChrist - which was absolutely thrilling. I love their music... I got to hang out with the band (though, if you know me, you know I'm a bit quiet around people I don't know!! So, my conversations were limited) Got to meet Bill Mosely too! All in all, both videos were a pleasure to work on and be a part of... Robyn is an awesome person to work with. As were Nick, Brad and the rest of the team - of course!

I've been working at Mattel off and on - assisting photographers there, though, the last week or two has been very slow. I'm doing school portraits to pick up a bit of extra cash on the side... Not fun, not creative and definitely not where I want to be. But it is behind a camera. And helps to pay the bills.

Best intentions

I've been thinking about blogging for a few weeks now, but never seem to set aside the time to do it. Which is horrible by all standards. Anyone who blogs knows that the key to a successful blog is consistency. And a successful blog results in a great marketing tool. So, here I go again!

I've been submitting images to So far, I've had 9 images accepted. Which excites me. Though only one of them has been viewed. One of the things I'm noticing is that I need to learn how to key word things better. I am great at descriptive words for the image, but visualizing what the images may be used for, or emotions that they evoke is very difficult to me.

Today I am doing a Commercial Lifestyle shoot. Which is a new venture for me. I'm trying to expand my horizons and find other avenues to get my work out there.

Then I am off to Montana for a week for my grandfather's 80th birthday. Should be fun stuff. :) I haven't been back to my home town in years. I'm definitely looking forward to being surrounded by the mountains and lakes and big sky again. ;)

Persistance is key

So I find myself experiencing a certain blockage when it comes to naming things. I can never think of an interesting or attention getting title to my photos or to blogs. I hate naming things. So that is going to be one of the challenges I face in my daily blog.

I plan to focus on social networking today. I plan to catch up on all the blogs that I've neglected in the last few weeks, and to actually post comments on them! Fancy that.

I had a photo shoot on Sunday with Aimee Chenal and Christina Guerra. I'm very happy with the results. Though, I do feel that I need to revisit my lighting. Pay more attention to the way that I am blowing out the saturation.

I've been working in Raw format the last few shoots and am thrilled with the results. I am dismayed that it took so long for me to make the switch. Honestly, I think there was a problem with my computer previously - because I had tried in the past and had a hard time of it - it's been so easy since I got the new computer which leads me to believe that it was a computer malfunction.

I've also started using Bridge for viewing and organizing my photos. I hope to get Capture 1 in the near future, but until then, I'm thrilled with the way that my process is going now.

My other project that I have in mind for today is backing up the my photos from my external hard drive to CD - and creating web galleries for each CD. I spent the day yesterday creating web galleries at Mattel. It seems to be a great tool, and another thing that is so easy to do.

"Listless Decadence"

So - Everything I've read says that having a blog is key to social networking. So, I started this blog a few months ago. I haven't done much to advertise it, and have noticed that ya get what ya give. I don't get any feedback, or comments, I don't feel like I have a readership. And, really, isn't that the point of the blog? I have been lax in writing to keep this interesting.

In truth, I wonder what I have to say to keep people interested. I shoot generally about once a week, so I should blog after each shoot and include a photo from the shoot.

I started to do a behind the scenes set - I think I need to do more of that. I need to have someone there to take a few pictures of me while I'm working, and I need to take pictures of the process.

My immediate goal is to write a blog every day. Most days it will be short and probably just a descriptive of my day. I was talking to an artist friend the other day and she said she sends a letter out each day to a mailing list of friends and family detailing what her projects are, and how they are going. I think that is a fabulous idea. I intend to use my blog in a similar way.

So I've been invited to do a show on June 12th at 8pm. It is a mixed media show - so my work will be my photography collaged with paint and other things.

I'm excited about the show, as it gives me a fun creative outlet and makes me be creative in a way that I haven't been in a long time.

Somewhere along the way in the last couple of months, I've lost my motivation.

I'm working to find it again. I posted to Craigslist and am working on doing more shoots.

Struggling forward

I recently posted about an internship that I was excited about. Well, the news I received is that the photographer chose to go with another. I'm disappointed, but he was very helpful even in his decline letter. He told me of several other options and ways to research and continue on my path. Such as joining a professional organization, taking workshops and seminars, as well as reading photographers forums.

I plan to follow his advice, and continue with my networking.

I've worked at Mattel several times in the last few weeks. Which is exciting - I've learned a lot already. The more that I'm around a studio environment, the more comfortable I am and excited to work more!

I've also been hanging out with other photographer friends, who are helping me with my retouching skills, I will be working on the set of a music video with a friend at the beginning of June.

So, lots going on, as always!

Grounding yourself

I just attended a seminar put on by Ladieswholaunch.com. Kim Castle was the speaker - she is part of BrandU.com and talked about how to be successful. Her main focus seemed to be finding out what makes YOU tick and being aware of that spark and sharing that with your customers.

Basically - you need to find out what makes you passionate about your business and share that passion in a focused manner.

She shared four steps to "pre-brand creation" Which were conditioning, vision form and focus. All of which I need to work on!

I tend to let myself get distracted by every day life. That is where Conditioning comes in - I need to condition myself to prevent anything from getting in my way. Fear, worries, etc.

Vision - I thought I had figured out what it was that I want to do. All I've figured out, to be honest, is that I want to do photography AND (this is the new part) That I am interested in more than alternative fetish and erotica. However, I'm not sure that the direction I am interested in going is necessarily more of a money maker than the Fetish/Erotica. So, I'm still working out the vision portion.

Form - I am quite certain I know the form that I want my business to take. However, I'm still not able to give a clear description of that form in my head or out loud to people. I need to work on that!!

Focus - Unshakable at that. Yes. I have focus, however, it doesn't seem to be unshakable at this point.

That is a very quick glimpse of what was discussed at the seminar tonight.

Interesting stuff.

I really really need to figure out myself and how myself translates into my business.

Estimating jobs

Recently a former co-worker and friend contacted me to let me know her husband was looking for a photographer to do a job for his company, which is not a start up, but is relatively new.

After speaking to him, I asked a friend to assist me with an estimate. In talking to her, I realized just how lost I am when it comes to running a photography business. I'm actually realizing that there is so much more to this than I could have anticipated.

I owe her a HUGE thank you for all of her assistance in putting together the questions and showing me the thought process for how to do an estimate. In addition to helping me with the going rates.

I had always operated under the impression that I could do it on my own. This thought process has been proven soo wrong.

There is the hair and make up person, the stylist, assistants to help with lighting and set ups, there is a teacher for child models, there is renting an RV if you need to shoot on location - so that the stylist and make up and hair people have a place to do their magic. A producer (as I am not experienced enough to know what to do)... So many things to think about.

All in all, to be honest, without her help, I probably would not have been able to do this. Thank you Krista!!!

I sent over the estimate and will wait to hear back and see what needs to be done moving forward. All in all, this has been an excellent and wonderful opportunity, even if they do not accept my proposal. I'm very excited about it!

What do you do when you have unexpected time?

I'm currently at Borders doing research and catching up on email. My internet connection at home is not working properly, and the phone agent could not figure out why over the phone.

Tomorrow morning, I'll be up waiting on the technical person to arrive and physically try to figure out what is going on. I'm very frustrated with their Customer Service. I called the number on my bill and was taken to an agent in Canada. He was very nice and tried. But he could not do anything. So he transferred me to the local office. The woman who "assisted" me there didn't seem to have a clue about anything other than very very basic troubleshooting. She didn't even know that they had an out-sourced call center in Canada, and thought (AFTER I explained to her that I had been transferred) that I lived in Canada. By the time I got off the phone with her I was AGAIN positive that Time Warner's Customer Service is hideous and unhelpful. She ran me through all the tests that the previous agent had done, and told me that I should contact whoever put in my wireless router. (which was me - it works fine) All of a sudden, the modem - which is only about 6 months old is not functioning.

So, I am without internet at home - going on 3 days. Very frustrating. If there were any other options for wireless (that don't involve a landline) I'd jump at leaving Time Warner.

So - back to my subject. What I do when I have unexpected time is waste it. Seriously. I'm at Borders - just spent time on myspace, modelmayhem and twitter. Answering emails, adding friends and networking. I am resolved to head home and get together my paperwork and meet with a friend/adviser to discuss a proposal that I have to put together by Monday. Which is wonderful, and scary all at the same time.

It is for a job that is different from anything else I've done. I'm very excited for the opportunity and the chance to put together the proposal and submit it.

I'll follow up with more on that later. :)

Long time since my last post

It's been a while since I posted. And a lot has happened.

I traveled to Chicago and stayed in Rockford/Milwaukee for a week before traveling cross country via route 66 to return home.

The experience was wonderful and inspiring. I spent many hours photographing classic signs, and the beautiful landscape. I had the intention (and still do) of using the photos to submit for stock imagery.

Since I've returned, I've applied for temporary positions and actually taken an ongoing contract position with a photography company - shooting school portraits. This is not exactly my goal, nor is it what I thought I would do. But after having thought it through and discussed the business aspect of my company - it is necessary. I feel that it will allow me to continue to assist and follow through with my goals, and pay the bills. Which is very important. I still have some savings left, but need to conserve them as much as possible.

My current plans are to work for this company, and accept assisting positions - as this is a contract/freelance job, I can decide what days I work, to some extent. I've also met with a friend and went through some magazines that I'd like to be published in and gotten the contact information for the creative directors, photo editors and assistants. All of whom I plan to mail out postcards.

Everyone I've talked to and the information I've read all says that it takes time and persistence to get into the industry. Which I knew, but didn't really think through.

In a way, I feel unsuccessful, having accepted this job, but if nothing else, that drives me to pursue my goals even more so, than before. As of today, I feel more and more in touch with the steps I need to take to succeed.

busywork

Well, I've done two paid shoots in the past couple of weeks. I am still trying to figure out how to get more work. 2 shoots a month just won't cut it.

I found out that I am now on Mattel's call list. Which is very exciting, but no calls yet.

I've spent the last 2 weeks getting the flu that has been going around, and having a friend in town. The first was not so much fun, the second was great. I'm actually flying to Chicago at the end of the month to drive back to California with her. I'm going to try to make it a business trip, am bringing my camera and lighting to do shoots on the road. :)

TRAVEL NOTICE:::
I am driving cross country from Chicago to Los Angeles via Route 66. I can make some detours, but it depends on the project.

I arrive in Chicago on the 25th, and will be available in that area, specifically in Rockford on the 26th and 27th.

I depart Chicago on the 2nd and drive cross country from there. Please contact me to arrange dates and shoots. I can push or pull back on my travel itinerary based on any paid shoots.

I'll be traveling with my lighting equipment, so I will only need a location to shoot.

In the mean time I'm applying to temp agencies looking for work.

I did a fashion shoot with Alex Galetskiy recently that was very fun, and I love the results. I have a shoot coming up for the next issue of Imago Zine. I'm excited about the concept and how it is coming together but jaded about shooting for the magazine, as they tend to be very slow with publication and I am still waiting on 2 more copies of the magazine from my last shoot for them.

But, it's more tear sheets for me!

Still no word on the computer issue. I sent in a letter of interest to The Do Lab for another internship. I'm not so sure about that one - I'd love to do it, but it is not really photography related per se, and I'm not sure how the timing will work out as far as my trip goes.

I'm waiting on a call from Blue Domain - they should be calling in the next day or so, regarding getting my website set up. I'm very excited!

Since it began

Well, my first week as an entrepreneur began with me sleeping in a few days and contacting friends, meeting for lunch and discussing tax issues.

Then I met with Mattel to discuss my availability and desire to do assistant and PA work with them. That went over well, and hopefully, soon, I'll be doing that part time off and on as jobs arise. I also spoke with a wardrobe stylist friend who is working on a set right now and offered me the opportunity to work with her a few days a week doing more PA stuff.

I did my first shoot as an assistant/second photographer for Krista Marlene Photography - we did a catalog shoot for Tokyopops new venture - the american version of the Gothic Lolita Bible. I should get tears on the clothing I shot as well as a paycheck for the day.

I went and bought a Macbook Pro - Went to lunch then met with Krista at Samy's Camera in Culver City. It was about 3:30pm, bright day light and a busy sunny day. I got there a bit before her, so I sat and read in my car, then decided to go in to the store. I was in the store all of about 5 minutes when Krista called and asked me to come outside. She pointed out that my window had been broken. Which flabbergasted me - I didn't have anything in the car... Until I realized that I did, my brand new MacBook Pro. I spoke to security, filed a police report and got my car fingerprinted. The people at Samy's were great and very apologetic. Unfortunately, there really isn't anything anyone can do.

I called Apple, they offered to give me a discount on a replacement. Now, all I can do is cross my fingers and hope that they catch whoever did it.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to write about that experience, as it is so personal and devistating to me. But - my decision to write on that experience is due to the fact that whoever stole the computer from my car followed me.

They followed me from the mall at Rosecrans and Sepulveda in El Segundo/Manhattan Beach, to the restraunt (which had an extremely busy parking lot) where I sat and ate my lunch, then onto the 405 freeway to Samy's, waited for me to leave my car, and with security gaurds on the other side of a window, they broke into my car.

The only thing stolen was my computer, and they knew exactly what they were doing and did it quickly in broad daylight in a busy parking lot on a popular street. The people at Samy's said this isn't the first time they've heard of this happening - it happens at their Hollywood store with people who go to the Grove as well.

I've replaced the computer and am hoping that this story has a happy ending. I am much more aware of my surroundings and not as comfortable about leaving my car parked on the street any longer. A strong, but painful lesson to have learned.

In other news, I've purchased 2 new lenses - an old school 50mm prime lense from a friend in great condition, though the motor drive on it is loud. And a new 85mm prime lense that is tack sharp and so much fun to shoot beauty with! I did a fashion shoot in Orange county and am working on the images from that shoot.

I've also submitted my work and interest in doing an internship with a local travel photographer. He posted an ad looking for a photographer who is interested in pursuing a career in photography, has their own projects running, and is willing to dedicate the 2 days, sometimes more to him and his business. In exchange, that person may be asked to travel with him as assistant on shoots, and will learn the ins and outs of the business. The interview for this position has been pushed back 3-4 weeks, due to a new assignment he has gone on, however, I feel very hopeful and positive that I am exactly what he needs.

More to come later as my weeks wind on and I see where I can go from here.

First day

So - today was the first day after my release from my day job.

I slept in. :)

Then did some organizing and paid bills and took care of some errands. That was the extent of my day.

Tomorrow I plan to hit craigslist and contact my friend and see if we can get together to start figuring out motivation and getting started.

Now that I'm starting, I'm at a loss about where to go or how to make it happen. :) But I'll figure it out.

Not much to say right now, but as I figure stuff out, I'll post more!

I'd like to start this post out about a blog I read - What makes you happy?

I have such a long list of things that make me happy. From driving my car on the freeway with no traffic to spending the day at Disneyland with my friends.

I love the concepts that he talks about - I use my Ipod on the freeway and blast songs I love and that always makes traffic better.

So, onto what I was thinking about (other than happiness) when I decided to post this blog. This weekend was so much fun. And it all had to do with motivation and spending time with friends.

Friday night, I joined my friend and fellow photographer Krista Marlene at the Altpix awards. The imagery, both illustrated and photographic was incredible. Overall, the images being shown were kitchy, interesting and very well done. We talked most of the night about photography, and working on business. Mainly me picking her brain - as she is already out there shooting and working in the industry. It was an early night - After I dropped her off, I went and spent time with some good friends, talking.

Saturday we went out to a prophouse sale - spent time with some of my closest friends and my mother. (one of those things that makes me happy - AND I'm a huge yard sale fan.) Saturday evening, Krista and I headed out to two more galleries. One - for Galadin Nauber, which was paintings and very informal. To be honest, the subject matter was over my head. I just didn't really understand the message that he was trying to get out there, and it didn't resonate with me. The gallery itself was lovely - in Glendale, and a great space. JFerrari gallery. I took their card and plan to find out what their requirements for shows are.

The second show of the evening was one hosted by and showing work of Mark Mez, Kurt Lindner, Dirk of Fingers Crossed. I actually knew a number of people at that show, and it was a great opportunity to network and talk to people I haven't talked to recently.

So, it starts. This is the last week of being an employee at Joann.com. I am very excited and motivated to move on, and also a bit reminiscent of the last 4 1/2 years.

Last year, I started a new mailing list/google group. After the first month or so, I completely forgot about it. After reading about marketing techniques, I've decided to update and keep up that list.

I'm very excited - I sent an invite to lots of friends to join as well. Unfortunately, Google has flagged it because I sent it to so many people. Hopefully, they will approve it quickly and get the invite out to everyone.

The list will be carefully moderated - and only pertinent messages will go through to members in box. It will be my way to notify people of any new images/updates about my website, gallery shows , where I will be and what I'm doing.

My current goals are to check out 2-3 gallery shows a week. I really want to get submersed in the art culture - seeing other peoples work, meeting other artists and creatives.

I also plan to visit FIDM to see if I can meet designers to work with.

Final days.

This week gave me the final date on my current "day job". Monday, several co-workers and I were called into the conference room to sign paper work and ask any questions about our pending layoff.

Everything has been pretty much explained and understood. So, Friday, Feb. 15 is my final day at this office. (or any office - in my opinion) The things facing me now -

Writing a business plan. I've played with this some, but feel like I don't have a strong grasp of what my future plans are. My current strategy is to find a form of photography that I can make money at and focus on that. Everything that I've read has said that you need to have a plan before you can make enough to survive. So. First plan of action - a business plan.

This involves:

Developing a marketing strategy - Who am I going to market towards and how do I reach out to them? ah. hence the need of a business plan!
Building a website - I think I'm going with Bludomain.com, I would have preferred livebooks, but in the spirit of being frugal, I've decided to hold off on dropping that much money into a website.
Postcards - This is a process of creating more photos that are eye grabbing.
I have my business cards! That is one step done.
I need to put together a professional portfolio. I'm playing with a few ideas, one of which is using a website like Blurb.com and making a professional looking book. I also plan to get 11x14 prints of my work to send out to magazines and publishers for review.
I need to find info on insurance too. health, liability, everything.

That's it for now. I'm still mulling over concepts and portfolio building ideas.

Well, it's been a few weeks, and I'm still plodding along at my day job. As of this week, I have 3 more weeks MINIMUM at this job. That is, unless they opt to not give me a 2 week notice. Every Monday, our company calls that week's lucky recipients of the "blue folder" into an office where they are given their two weeks notice. I thought I'd be in the group this week. But alas, I was not. Which means I get at least 3 more weeks of guaranteed pay. Then, once I am let go, I'll have a severance package that will allow me to move onward with my goals.

NOT, mind you, that I haven't been working on those goals, it's just that some are a bit more money oriented than others.

I've been researching websites. I have a site currently hosted and built by a good friend of mine. Unfortunately, his life is busy busy and it has become very hard for him to help me. The other person I was working with as stopped responding to my emails. Ah, well, that's what happens when you are trading. So. My decision, based on the fact that I absolutely need a web presence, is to hire a company to do it.

I've looked at a few different companies - had thought I was going to go with Livebooks. But their prices are a bit higher than I can justify spending, when I don't have a solid client list. I started talking to a few friends, others in the photography industry, and have been led to Bludomain.com. At this point, I've pretty much chosen a template and decided to go with them.

I did research what other users were saying, and essentially - it's a template company, so, it's not going to be so original. That is one sacrifice I'm willing to make, as my work in and of itself is original, and honestly - my focus for my site is ease of use, clean format and how easy it is for me to update and keep it up on my own. So far, they win on all those accounts. Another issue that I've read about, which does cause me some concern, is that they are very slow to respond, and often do a fix, but don't notify you that the fix has been implemented.

While that is a concern, I also read in several sources that fixs are implemented very quickly and that overall, they are happy with the service. I'm in the camp that, no matter who I go with, there are going to be some problems. These issues, while frustrating, are not deal breakers for me.

I'm reading up on various books - one I just got in the mail yesterday, "What they don't teach you at Harvard Business School" By Mark H. McCormack - I read about the book in a blog somewhere... I read so many entrepreneurial blogs, that I can't keep up with them.

I've been to a few meet and greets - which, due to my shyness, have not been as fruitful as I'd like. BUT Every time I talk to someone new, it's a step closer to my goals.

I finally got my new business cards - for Saryn Christina, which give out my business phone number, and my new email address, which is also set up. Saryn (at) SarynChristina (dot) com. Thanks goes out to my current webmaster Mark for hooking me up, even with his busy schedule. SarynChristina.com is currently redirected to my alternative site, SarynAngel.com (which ALSO needs to be re-designed) until I can afford to get it built. But, hey, that's better than free ad space for Godaddy!

I'd love to hear from people if they have suggestions on web designers or feed back on anything I've posted here.

My last post was Dec. 4th. *sigh*

The holidays caught me being slow and distracted. I've been shooting here and there, did an assisting job for Dan Santoso - who is a wonderful photographer, and a great guy. It was informative and a great day.

Other than that, I've done a few shoots, and talked to a couple of friends. It's inspiring to talk to them, one is a fashion stylist in the movie industry, whose input I value and respect. She has an eye and the experience for fashion photography. Which is awesome. So I look to her for a lot of feedback. Then her boyfriend, who just happens to be one of my oldest friends is a lighting guy in the film industry. He was also extremely helpful. He looked through a bunch of my work and gave me feedback on lighting, also introduced me to another friend of his who gave me a gel pack to look at. They both recommended that I gel my lights and play with the color and temp tones of my lighting. I need to find more time to talk to them and pick their brains some more.

That brings me to my current goal plan. I've been reading other blogs and taking suggestions and ideas from them - everyone has such wonderful input for how to start this year off right.

I am working on completing one small goal a day, writing it out on a piece of paper and following up on it. Todays goal - update my organizer.

Some of my other longer term goals are:
-Create a budget (and stick to it - daily, weekly, monthly and yearly)
-Figure out the necessary equipment that I need to move forward in my business.
-lighting, cameras, lenses etc.
-build my website(s)
-Learn more about marketing
- put together a comp card and portfolio - Already did the Business cards!!! :)
- Attend various seminars and meet and greets each week.
-Organize my time to make the most of the time that I have when I am not shooting.
-create a marketing plan
-organize all of the contacts that I already have
-clean up my file system!
-create a journal to jot down ideas.

My personal goals -
Stick to my weight loss plan
Spring cleaning and organizing. And ... maybe a bit of re-decorating, which I love to do!

Most of this involves getting organized and spending some time at home! Right now I'm busy busy running around, so much so, that when I am at home, I don't want to do anything but relax and read.

I've been feeling unmotivated. My day job is moving slow, and the initial excitement of the company moving and building my own business has worn thin.

I love my parents, they are always there for me, they are very very supportive of my future, but also concerned. I have a decided um. way with money. And, it's not a very healthy one. Unless you count spending it like it's going out of style as a healthy money management system. So, while they are supportive of me and my goals, they express their concerns with how fast money flies out the window, and that I haven't been making enough money on the side to even pay my rent on a monthly basis.

All of this is weighing heavily on my mind. I can't brush aside their concerns, as they are valid. But, I feel that if I don't take this opportunity, which may very well be a once in a lifetime opportunity, I will never be... successful.

So. Again - I am researching, reading, and talking to people. Today is an exciting day for me. I sent an email to a local photographer who is accepting interns. He is in the field that I want to be in, and excels at it. I am hoping that he will agree to take me on as an intern. I'm good enough, and passionate about learning. (and about working to achieve my life long goals!)

I've always known that interning/assisting working photographers is one of the best ways to learn the field. But when I did it while I was younger (very limited) I didn't have the same desires I do now. I'm much more determined now.

In addition to contacting this photographer, I spoke to a good friend of mine. She works as a photographer for a local company that hires contract photographers to do assisting and various jobs - she has offered to help me get my foot in the door. Which is another amazing opportunity to learn from those working actively.

So, my current goal is to find something that motivates me each week. Small short term goals that I can achieve and will help me to feel motivated. For me, motivation is key. The opportunities are there, I just need to look for them.

Exploring niches.

So, for most of my life I've done alternative portraiture. I love finding unique people and photographing them. Usually girls, but I've worked with some incredible male models too.

In my search to figure out what I want to do with my photography, it's become apparent that I need to be known in order to get hired. And I suck at networking because I tend to be a bit shy and insecure, especially in large groups. The internet has been a haven for me, because it's much easier to just send a message and not have to worry about immediate declines.

So - along with all the financial and business blogs I've been researching, I've also been reading about networking and getting myself out there. Hence, me starting a blog of my own. There are a lot of bloggers out there. It's just one more way of putting yourself on the map.

About 8 months ago, I decided that there was no money in alternative/fetish/erotica photography, well, not the kind of money I'd like to make. So, I made the decision to switch over to fashion and beauty, which is something that I honestly know relatively little about. I love fashion - but am drawn to dark alternative fashions. Or vintage wear. Anything that has a shock value to it.

I've been struggling to create images that I see in the magazines that inspire me. And... as any good photographer or Fashionista will tell you - I'm behind the times. Trying to create something that is already created or mimic someone else's vision isn't the way to do it. My first few shoots lacked feeling. They were pretty images, of pretty girls in pretty outfits, but didn't have the wow factor that I want.

Looking back at them, I realized that in order for me to achieve what I want, I needed to stay true to myself. I want to do fashion - I want to do beauty. For me, that means combining my natural tendency for moody creativity with the fashions. Making fashion into art. Keeping that in mind - playing with lighting and backdrops - I've actually achieved a few fashion shots that I'm very happy with. It's going to take time and practice. But I'm on the road to creating a portfolio I am very proud of.

In that spirit - I'm collaborating with stylists and make up artists who are incredible. This Sunday I have a very important shoot (to me!) collaborating with Skin.Graft.Designs. It's a very exciting shoot for me.

I also got my copy of Imago Magazine. It's small but packs a lot of punch. There are a lot of folks from the LA club scene and Burning man scene featured in it - Perish, Modern Day Muse, Melodie Gore, Lucent Dossier, Skin Graft Designs... well, and ME. My first ever bathing suit set - two full pages of my work, styled by Wicked Vanity. Long time in the making, but it's here. And I'm excited. :)

I'm still waiting on my copy of the December Issue #84 of Tattoo Savage, which also features 2 of my photos - from a shoot I did with Natalie Addams - as the "Lady Pincushion" for my Carnival Side Show series.

Starting out.

I've been blogging for years - more on a personal note. This is my first time trying to keep a blog going that will catalog the trials and tribulations of starting my own business as a photographer.

To start, I'd like to fill you in on where I'm coming from.

I started taking photography classes when I was in 10th grade and fell in love with creating photos. I wanted to photograph all the pretty people I'd see around me. For me at that time, it was all the beautiful goth girls and androgynous goth boys.

As I got older, I took a few years of classes at a local college. Learned a lot about studio shooting. I met more people in the "goth scene" here in LA and started photographing them. This lead me to fetish and erotica photography. Which I focused on and became quite good at. I shot 35mm film on a Canon A2. That got me by for about 10 years, before I realized that digital was the way to the future. I started shooting 1/2 the shoot in film and the other using my little point and shoot digital camera.

Unfortunately, I never had the money to purchase lights and various equipment. I used construction lights and available light for most of my shoots. I worked for a sports photography company shooting little league, then took a full time job at Joann.com.

I talked to the owners of Miss Kittys Parlour and started shooting for them, their shows and the club kids that showed up. Unfortunately, as fun as that was, it was difficult to dedicate every Friday night.

Then I invested in my first DSLR camera. A Canon 20D, and I haven't shot film since. After that, I finally got 2 monopods and umbrellas. I was finally able to create imagery that looks like I wanted it to. Though, I still want to invest in a new camera and lighting system!

Which is where I am now. I want a business that will support me, doing what I love.

My current job is about to end, the company was bought out and that leaves me with time on my hands.

In reviewing my situation, I have a little money to invest in my company and live on while I do it. My goal is to be making enough money to support my business in the next 6 months.

To those ends, I have started researching financial blogs and investments, as well as photography consultants and discussing business with other photographers. I intend to build my fashion portfolio, as well as my contacts in fashion and beauty. While I'm doing that, I plan to work as a temp for temp agencies, to supplement my income.

I also intend to blog as close to every day as I can. Anyone have any suggestions for building a business? Any questions for me? Post a comment! Let me know what you think.
